PRESS RELEASE
20th November 2012
Action Homeless and Citizen598 announce Home Truths project
Action Homeless have been awarded £5,300 from the Big Lottery Fund through the Awards for All grant programme to deliver a brand new project that will bring communities together and challenge perceptions of homelessness. The new project ‘Home Truths’ is a partnership between Action Homeless and Citizen598 and will involve a range of community groups and organisations.
Home Truths aims to tackle misconceptions about homeless people by engaging the local community in a series of workshops and consultation events. Organisations already signed up to take part in the project include DSU Volunteering, Rushey Mead Secondary School and Creative Leicestershire. An initial consultation period will engage local people in conversations about homelessness and gather personal thoughts, opinions and ideas.
This will be followed by a series of workshops for Action Homeless residents. Through these workshops homeless people will be able to respond to the views of their local community and tell their own personal story about their experience of homelessness using the arts as a vehicle for expression. Home Truths will culminate in an exhibition to be held at LCB Depot in March 2013 which will present the work of service users and material gathered throughout the project. The exhibition will be a live space open to the public where audio, visual and digital pieces will be displayed with visitors encouraged to continue adding to the project.
Eilidh Kennedy of Action Homeless said ‘As well as raising awareness of an important issue in Leicester, Home Truths will be providing fantastic opportunities for homeless people to tell their story, gain new skills and develop their self confidence.’
Nathan Human, Director of Citizen598 said “This project offers a great opportunity for different communities to work together to produce something exciting that will not only be artistically interesting but also build practical skills for service users of Action Homeless. As a company we like to help present people's stories and Home Truths is the opportunity to do just that on a large scale and involve the public too.”
Home Truths will be launched at a consultation event with DSU Volunteering this month with workshops and the final exhibition to follow in March at LCB Depot Gallery in the Cultural Quarter, Leicester. If you would like any information on how you can get involved in the Home Truths project then please contact Eilidh Kennedy at [email protected] or 0116 221 1851.
